The Gateway: Hart

If you’re looking for adventure along the Green River, hop off in Hart County where you can pet kangaroos at Kentucky Down Under Adventure Zoo, ride through an Amish farm full of exotic animals at Dutch Country Safari Park, tour a cave with the world’s longest suspension bridge right in the middle of a historic Trail Town, spend the night in a Conestoga wagon, treehouse, teepee, cabin on the river, short term rentals, or franchise hotels, and bring along your pet for the fun! Most of our rivers in Hart County are underground (like our caves), but the beautiful Green River bisects our county east and west above ground, and Interstate 65 bisects us north and south. We’re part of Mammoth Cave National Park, and our Blueway on the Green section of the river that leads into the state’s only Certified Water Trail has beautiful 300 Springs, and blue holes above cavernous depths. We’re also on US Bike Route 23 that connects with the TransAmerica Bike Route in Hodgenville at Lincoln Birthplace National Historical Park just a few miles from our northern border.

Outdoor Activities

Kangaroos in Kentucky? Oh, my! You can pet more than 50 of them at Kentucky Down Under Adventure Zoo. One of our more than 100 Amish-owned businesses is Dutch Country Safari Park where you can take a wagon ride to feed exotic animals. Right in the “Hart” of cave country, you’ll find Hidden River Cave, and yes, there is a rushing subterranean river on a tour that takes you across the world’s longest underground suspension bridge. Or you can take an optional Wild Cave Tour along the banks of the subterranean river. The self-guided tour of the adjacent American Cave Museum and down to the mouth of the cave is free. Of course, we have canoeing and kayaking along the beautiful Green River and liveries to accommodate your needs. And if you want fun along the edge of Mammoth Cave National Park, you can zipline, e-bike, try the aerial challenge course, or ride a horse. So much to do you’ll want to stay a day or two!

If you want to go more primitive and remove, River Bend Resort, one of our Amish-owned businesses, has cabins and tent sites on the banks of the river. Of course, we also have franchise hotels, a cute retro motel, short term rentals, and campsites.

Eat/Drink/Shop

Downtown Horse Cave has cute shops and local restaurants in their National Register of Historic Places District above Hidden River Cave where you can find vintage, antiques, boutiques, and gift shops. You can even stroll along the award-winning cell phone tour to hear locals tell stories about a town that grew on top of a cave. Our Dennison’s Roadside Market is full of locally grown produce, handmade crafts and gifts, and locally made food items. You can pick flowers or take a wagon ride to the pumpkin patch in season. Or you can grab a soft drink from the cooler, sit in a rocker or swing on the porch and watch the kids on the playground or the tractors driving by.
